SAN MATEO, Calif. – March 19, 2008 – Responding to growing adoption of VoIP by its customers, Untangle announced VoIP support for the Untangle Gateway Platform, the world’s first commercial-grade open source solution for blocking spam, spyware, viruses, adware and unwanted content on the network.
To date, security, firewall and Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions have faced challenges co-existing alongside VoIP and Asterisk servers resulting in increased SIP traffic latency. For small-to-medium businesses (SMB) using VoIP for voice communications, this has often meant choosing between the lesser of two evils – poor voice quality or an unsecured network.
“VoIP and network security have traditionally not played well together,” said Dirk Morris, co-founder and CTO of Untangle. “With our new Express Handling Architecture we’ve found a solution that doesn’t require throwing hardware and bandwidth to the problem.”
Through its innovative Express Handling Architecture, the Untangle Gateway Platform efficiently identifies and routes SIP and Asterisk sessions directly to their servers while processing all remaining network traffic for unwanted malware.
“We route all our VoIP calls through Untangle – and the voice quality is crystal clear,” said Andy Harper, President of Gaeltek – an Untangle channel partner. “It works so well, we already have many small business customers who have implemented with VoIP going through Untangle and there’s more on the way.”
Untangle was founded with the vision of untangling the complexities of technology, initially targeting network security and control for small and medium size businesses. The company follows Open Source development practices to create better code and make it widely available. The Untangle Gateway Platform, the world’s first commercial-grade open source solution for blocking spam, spyware, viruses, adware and unwanted content on the network, provides a free and better alternative to costly, inflexible proprietary appliances. Untangle’s applications are currently being used in thousands of businesses in a variety of industries, including financial services, real estate, education, bio-science, and professional services.
